KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by in-state rival Rhode Island, 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-16), in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Providence's record stands at 11-14 on the season and Rhode Island moves to 11-12 overall.
The teams played an even first set with Rhode Island taking a 26-24 extra-point win. URI tallied 15 kills while PC recorded 11. Freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) each had four kills in the set.
URI followed up with a 25-15 second set win to go up 2-0 in the match. Fitzgerald had a team-best three kills in the set.
Providence got out to a 10-7 lead in the third set. The Rams then came back to tie the game 12 and held a lead the rest of the way en route to their 25-16 set win to take the match.
Overall, Fitzgerald led the Friars with nine kills. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) recorded 26 assists and freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) had a team-best in digs with 13. Junior Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) also tallied double-digit digs, adding 12.
Rhode Island was led by Catie Stefen who recorded 14 kills. Callan Kinnan put up 38 assists. Franki Darnold and Lizzy Scanlon tied for a team-lead in digs with 15.
The Friars next play on Sunday, Oct. 27 at Hartford. The match is set to start at 2:00 p.m. in West Hartford, Conn. The game will be streamed on AmericaEast.TV.
