Providence Volleyball Falls To The Red Storm

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s volleyball team took on the St. John’s Red Storm on Sunday, Oct. 22. The match was a hard fought back and forth affair as each match was decided by five or less points. With the loss, the Friars are now 15-10 on the season and 4-6 in BIG EAST play.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-The Friars claimed the first set with a score of 25-20.
-After falling behind 5-2, Providence went on a 10-0 run to jump to a 12-5 lead.
-Junior Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) led Providence with six kills. Sophomore Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) added four kills as well.
-Sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.), freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) and senior Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each recorded four digs.
-Providence held St. John’s to a .105 hitting percentage in the first set.

SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-Set Two proved to be a back and forth affair with neither team being able to build a major rally. The Red Storm would eventually take the set, 29-27.
-Alderson exploded for five kills in the second set.
-Freshman Libero McKenzie Lydon (Stuart, Fla.) recorded her first career kill in the second set.
-Barber tallied a total of 15 assists.
-As a team, PC recorded a .382 hitting percentage.

THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-Another back and forth set saw the Red Storm pull away at the end to take it, 25-22.
-Alderson and sophomore Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) each recorded four kills in the set.
-Root tallied six digs and two service aces in set three.

FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-St. John’s claimed the fourth and final set with a score of 28-26.
-PC held the Red Storm to a hitting percentage of .158 in the fourth set.
-Root rolled to 10 kills in the final set.
-Lydon added five digs in set four.

MATCH HIGHS:
-Providence had four players with double-digit kills. Root led the team with 19. Alderson added 14 kills and both Onyundo and Schaible each added 11.
-The Friars also had four athletes with double0-digit digs. Root again led the team with 15 while Barber recorded 12, Clark tallied 11 and Lydon had 10.
-Barber added 52 assists in the match as well.
-As a team, the Friar’s recorded a .297 hitting percentage and tallied seven service aces.

NEXT UP:
The Friars play host to #13 Creighton University on Oct. 27 and 28. Providence and the BlueJays will face off first on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m. before closing out the weekend series on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 5:00 p.m.
