The Providence College volleyball team defeated Saint Peter's in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-15) on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Alumni Hall. Providence improves to 11-11 on the year and 3-2 in the America East. Saint Peter's moves to 3-20 overall, 1-8 in the MAAC.
Providence won the first set 25-21 behind junior Mackenzie Ziegler's (Portage, Wis.) six kills. Both team traded points early on until the Friars took the lead for good at the 16 point mark. PC had 17 kills in the set compared to Saint Peter's 11.
The Friars had the lead the entire second set en route to a 25-18 set-win. Freshmen Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and Abby Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) tied for the most kills in the set with three.
To close out the match Providence won the third set, 25-15. Sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) had the team- lead in kills for the set with four. Freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) tallied five digs.
Overall, the Friars were led by Ziegler who had 10 kills. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) had a game-best 33 assists. Defensively, Cruz led the team with 11 digs.
Saint Peter's was led by Lauren Behrens who had 11 kills. Kaitlyn Sitton had the team-lead in assists with 16 and Jennifer Pliska had a game-best 12 digs.
The Friars next play four straight away games. On Friday the team faces Stony Brook at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday the Friars play at UMBC for a 2:00 p.m. start.
