The Providence College volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (25-15, 26-24, 19-25, 26-24) win over UMass-Lowell on Saturday, Oct. 13. Providence improves to 10-11 on the year and 3-2 in the America East. UMass-Lowell falls to 0-17 overall and 0-5 in the America East.
The Friars started the match out strong, taking the first set, 25-15. Junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) and sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) led PC in kills with three each in the set. Freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) tallied seven digs.
Providence took the next set in extra points, 26-24. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) joined Ziegler with three kills in the set. The team combined for four blocks in the set.
The River Hawks won the third set, 25-19 to make the game 2-1, in favor of Providence.
Providence bounced back and won the fourth set in extra points, 26-24. Sophomore Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) led the team with five kills and eight digs in the set.
Overall, the Friars were led by Ziegler who tallied 13 kills. Wiesler added 28 assists and Cruz had a game-best 21 digs.
The River Hawks were led by Brooke Peterson and Ella Merrill who each registered 13 kills. Kamiren Humphrey had 38 assists and Peterson led the team in digs with 20.
The Friars next play on Wednesday, Oct. 16 in a non-conference matchup against Saint Peter's. The match is set to start at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
