The Providence College volleyball team got back on track on Thursday, September 27 with a 3-0 sweep over the Rams of Winston-Salem State. PC won the match with scores of 30-16, 30-27 and 33-31. The Friars improve their record to 10-6. The Friars started off on fire posting a .786 attack percentage in game one before cooling off to a respectable average of .336 attack percentage over the final two games of the match. Providence won the first game handily but had to deal with a Ram teamed that climbed themselves back into the second and third game making it tough on the Friars. Junior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) finished with a match-high 13 kills including a kill to end games two and three. The 13 kills by Flynn marks the fifteenth match in a row where she has recorded double-figure kills. Senior Sarah Fleming (Saint Paul, Minn.) had another solid effort with 11 kills, including a couple of crucial ones down the stretch in games two and three. Junior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the three Friars in double-figure kills with 11. Junior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) recorded a match-high 34 assists, giving her a total of 598 for the season. "We struggled defensively tonight, especially in the second and third games," said Head Coach Margot Royer. "The difference this year is that we can still pull out a victory because of our high confidence level." The win pushes the Friar record to 10-6, which marks the fastest to double-digit wins since 2000, when the team reached 10 wins in 15 games. "We are very happy to have reached double-digit wins this early in the season and we hope to continue the winning ways down the stretch," said Royer.
The Friars will take a short trip down I-40 to the campus of North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C. for a two day tournament taking place on Friday and Saturday, September 28-29 with matches against North Carolina A&T, Savannah State and the host school North Carolina Central.
