The Providence College volleyball team won its last non-conference game of the 2013 season on Wednesday night against Bryant, 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20), in Alumni Hall. The Friars improve to 7-9 on the season and Bryant falls to 2-14.
Providence took the first set, 25-15, with junior Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) and freshman Kayla Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) leading the way with three kills each. With the score tied at two, the Friars went on a 6-0 run and remained in the lead the rest of the set.
Bryant won a close second set, 25-23, in the team's only set victory of the day. Bryant had the lead until the game the 15 point mark. The two teams were then tied again at 19 but the Bulldogs were able to eventually go on and finish out the set.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a small lead in the third set until the nine point mark when the Friars tied them. Providence then held the lead the rest of the way, winning the set, 25-21.
Providence won the fourth set, 25-20, to win the match (3-1). Freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) tallied five kills in the set. Fellow freshman, Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.), recorded 11 digs.
Overall, Providence was led by Fitzgerald who had a double-double (16 kills, 17 digs). Sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) also had double-digit kills with 10. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) registered a game-best 40 assists. Cruz also had a game-best, with 22 digs.
Bryant was led by Alexandria Clyburn and Sara DePouw who had 10 kills apiece. Jana Kmec had 36 assists and Claire Van Dyk tallied 18 digs.
The Friars start America East play on Sunday, Sept. 29 against Hartford in Alumni Hall. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
