Volleyball Moves To 2-0 In BIG EAST Play With 3-2 Win Over Georgetown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women’s volleyball team defeated Georgetown, 3-2, (19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 15-7) in a BIG EAST contest at Alumni Hall on Sunday, Sept. 24. With the win, the Friars improve 13-4 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST on the season. Georgetown dropped to 6-8 (0-2 BIG EAST).

SET 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Georgetown took the first set with a score of 25-19.
- Providence Sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) tallied six kills in the first set.
- Freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) notched 10 assists and added two digs for the Friars in the set.
- Junior Olivia King (Ardmore, Pa.) paced Georgetown with five kills while junior Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga.) had 15 assists and two digs for the Hoyas.
- Georgetown had a .533 hitting percentage (18 kills, 2 errors, 30 attacks) in the set.

SET 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence rebounded with a 25-18 win in the second set.
- Root and junior Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) each had four kills in the set for the Friars.
- Providence sophomore Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) tallied three kills, three blocks and two digs, while Barber notched eight digs in the set.
- Providence hit .417 (11 kills, 1 error, 24 attacks) and had 7.5 blocks in the set.

SET 3 HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars upped theIR lead to 2-1 in the match with a 25-19 win in the third set.
- Root had another strong offensive performance in the set, tallying four kills with two digs.
- Onyundo tallied three kills, four service aces and two digs in the set, while Barber recorded nine assists and two kills for the Friars.
- The Friars hit a remarkable .500 (13 kills, 0 errors, 26 attacks).


 

 

SET 4 HIGHLIGHTS:
- The visiting Hoyas knotted the match at 2-2 with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
- Root once again paced PC in the set with four kills while Schaible added two kills and three blocks for the Friars.
- Junior Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill.) led the way for Georgetown with six kills with McKnight notching 17 assists and two digs for the Hoyas.
- Georgetown hit .414 (19 kills, 7 errors, 29 attacks while Providence hit .357 (12 kills, two errors, 28 attempts in the set.

SET 5 HIGHLIGHTS: 
- Providence posted a 15-7 win in the fifth set to take the 3-2 victory for the match
- Onyundo recorded five of her 16 kills overall in the deciding set, while Schiable notched three service aces and two digs for the Friars
- Providence notched three service aces, including an ace on match point to secure the victory.

MATCH NOTES:
- Root recorded a match-high 21 kills with three blocks and three digs for Providence.
- Onyundo added 16 kills and seven digs while Schaible had 14 kills and seven blocks for the Friars.
- Barber had 44 assists, six digs, four aces and three blocks in the victory.
- Speech led the way for Georgetown with 17 kills and four blocks while McKnight notched 54 assists and six digs in the setback
- Georgetown hit .292 (66 kills, 26 errors, 137 attacks while Providence hit an impressive .410 (59 kills, 9 errors, 122 attacks) in the match.

NEXT UP:
Providence plays on Friday, Sept. 29 on the road against St. John’s University. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
