Volleyball Has Five Game Win Streak Snapped At Hands Of Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-2

Fairfield, Conn. - The Providence College volleyball team had its five game winning streak snapped on Saturday, September 22, at the Sacred heart Invitational by the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore. UMES won the match 3-2, by the scores of 30-17, 30-18, 28-30, 25-30, and 17-15. With the loss, the Friars' record drops to 8-5, while UMES record improves to 7-3.

After getting beat in the first two games, the Friars showed resiliency by winning the next tow games by narrow margins. The fifth and deciding game was back and forth right until the end when UMES earned the victory on a Johnson kill and a Toney error.

The Friars were led by senior Sarah Fleming (Saint Paul, Minn.) and junior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who had 17 kills a piece. Fleming also added 12 digs and four assists. Junior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) had 49 assists and a game-high four service aces. Junior Aida Cadres (Beverly Hills, Calif.) added a solid effort recording a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs.

"We showed a lot of heart tonight coming back from a 2-0 deficit and almost taking the match in five," said Head Coach Margot Royer. "Our outside hitters played really well and I am proud of how much we fought tonight."

Providence has two matches on Sunday, September 23 to wrap up the Sacred Heart Invitational against Saint Francis and the host school, Sacred Heart.
