    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team defeated Howard, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Ninth Annual Friar Classic in Alumni Hall. Providence improves to 6-9 on the season and Howard moves to 10-5. After the match Howard was named Tournament Champion with two wins in three matches.

    Providence took the first set, 25-19 behind four kills by junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) and sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.).

    The Bison took the second set, 25-16, in what would prove to be their only set win of the match.

    The fourth set was a back-and-forth match with Providence winning, 25-22, to take the match (3-1). The Friars won the match with a block by Ziegler and sophomore Nicole Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.).

    Providence had a total of 20 blocks in the game compared to Howard's eight.

    Zigeler led the Friars in kills with 14. Freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and Witt also tallied double-digit kills with 10 each. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) had a game-best 37 assists and freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) had ten digs. For her play, Witt was named to the All-Tournament Team.

    Howard was led by Katherine Broussard who had 12 kills. Stephanie Shultis tallied 25 assists and Allyson Lods registered 10 digs.

    The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 25 when they host Bryant at 6:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
