The Providence College volleyball team lost to St. Francis (N.Y.), 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-22), in the opening day of the Ninth Annual Friar Classic on Friday night in Alumni Hall. Providence moves to 5-8 on the season and St. Francis improves to 4-10.
Providence played a back-and-forth third set with St. Francis, with the Terriers winning, 25-22. Sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) had a team-best three kills in the set. The Terriers' Slavica Stefanovic tallied five kills in the set.
The Friars registered 11 kills in all three sets. St. Francis recorded 12, 11, and 15 kills in each set, respectively.
Providence was led by Witt who registered nine kills. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) tallied 31 assists and freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) led with 15 digs.
St. Francis was led by Stefanovic who had 11 kills. Defensively Feliz Ramirez had 13 digs. Kamalei Clifton recorded 15 assists in the match.
The Friars play two matches Saturday, Sept. 21 to close out the Ninth Annual Friar Classic at Alumni Hall. At 9:00 a.m. Providence will face Morgan State. In the final game of the tournament, the Friars will play Howard at 3 p.m.
