Providence, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by Sacred Heart, 3-2, on Friday, September 19 in the team's first match of the Friar Classic. The Pioneers won the match with game scores of 13-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19 and 15-7. With the victory, Sacred Heart moves to 8-4, while the Friars fall to 6-7. Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) played her best all-around match of the season for Providence. The 5-8 senior setter registered a double-double, recording 24 assists and a season-high 16 digs. Sheehan now has 367 assists and 66 digs in 2008. Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.) continued to show her defensive leadership against Sacred Heart. The 5-7 senior posted 21 digs and added a service ace. Krahenbuhl ranks first on the team in digs with 190 digs on the year. Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Friar offense, registering 12 kills. She also had seven digs and a season-high nine blocks for the match. The Friars play two more matches in the Fifth Annual Friar Classic on Saturday, September 20. PC faces Coppin State at 11:00 a.m. and Texas-El Paso at 5:00 p.m. The Coppin State contest can be seen live on Friars.com via subscription.
