MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Providence volleyball team earned its first win of the season, a 3-2 victory over Howard University, and fell to Cornell, 3-0, to conclude action at the Robert Morris University Crowne Plaza Classic at the Sewall Center in Moon Township, Pa.

The Friar defeat of Howard (30-25, 19-30, 24-30, 30-28, 16-14) was led by freshman Katie Fleming (Cary, N.C.) who notched 24 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 14 kills and freshman Rachel Tucker (Burleson, Texas) registered 14 digs.

Fleming led Providence in the Cornell match (23-30, 28-30, 11-30) notching 11 kills. Sophomore Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.) had eight digs for the Friars in the loss.

Hayley Grieve notched a match-high 14 kills and six digs for the Big Red.

With the Howard win and Cornell loss, the Friars move to 1-10 on the season.

The Friars return to action on Friday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. versus Robert Morris at St. Francis (Pa.) University.
