PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team defeated Brown, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-23), on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall. All three sets were won by a score of 25-23, in the Friars first home match of the season. Providence moves to 5-3 on the season and Brown falls to 0-4.
In the first set, both teams were even with 12 total kills, but the Friars took the set, 25-23. Brown had a 16-8 lead early on but Providence came back with five straight points to pull within three (16-13). The Friars continued to battle their way back, tying the score at 22. PC scored the next two points to go up, 24-22. The Bears scored one more point in the set until falling, 25-23.
The second set was back-and-forth from the beginning. With the score tied 23-23, the Friars scored two straight points to close out the set 25-23. Providence scored the final point by forcing an attack error on Brown.
In the final and third set, the two teams traded points early on until the Friars went on a 5-0 run to take the lead, 9-4. Brown came back and tied it at 22 and again at 23. Providence scored the next point from a block assists by sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.). Witt then ended the set, and the game, with a kill.
The Friars were led by Fitzgerald who had eight kills and a team-best 20 digs. Junior Annie Russian (Round Rock, Texas) also had eight kills. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) recorded a game-best 27 assists.
Brown was led by Maddie Lord with 12 kills. Sarah Lucenti contributed 19 assists and Alexandra Rieckhoff led the Bears in digs with 19.
Providence travels to Hanover, N.H. for the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14. The Friars will play Manhattan and Grand Canyon on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, Providence will face Central Connecticut State at 9:30 a.m. and Dartmouth at 2:30 p.m.
