PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Providence College volleyball team (1-13) fell to the Brown University Bears (3-3) in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18 and 25-13 on Wednesday, September 12 in Providence, R.I.
The Friars fell behind early in the first set surrendering eight of the first 10 points to trail 8-2, but would fight their way back to pull within one point at 14-13. The Bears, would score the next three points to stretch the lead to 17-13, but the Friars would answer right back with a three-point streak of their own to pull within one again at 17-16. After Brown took a 22-18 lead, the Friars would yet again pull within one at 22-21, but could not get any closer as Brown took the set 25-21. Sophomore Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) led the Friars with five kills in the set while freshman Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) collected eight of the team's 11 assists.
The second set started much like the first with the Friars finding themselves in an early 6-1 hole, but worked hard to fight back and tie the set at 8-8. Three consecutive points by the Bears were quickly answered by Providence and the set was again tied at 11-all. The Bears would go on to take six of the next seven points for a 17-12 advantage, but the resilient Friars would rally to score the next five points to tie the second set at 17-17. The Friars would only register one more point for the set as they fell 25-18. Senior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) collected eight digs in the set to lead all players.
The teams traded the first four points of the third set before Brown jumped out to a 7-3 lead. The Bears would maintain a slim lead throughout the set before scoring 11 of the final 13 points to close out the set 25-13. Sophomore Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) collected a double-double, leading the Friars with 10 kills and collecting 11 digs while leading the team with a .346 hitting percentage. Wiesler would end the match with 22 assists to lead all players and Muzzonigro would tie for the match-lead with 18 digs.
The Friars will travel to Lewisburg, Pa to play in the Bucknell University Tournament on Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15. This will mark the fourth and final tournament the Friars will play in during the regular season. The Friars will open the tournament versus Quinnipiac at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14. The next day the Friars will play Fordham and host Bucknell at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. respectively.
Providence will play its first match at home this season on Sunday, October 7 versus America East foe Stony Brook. This match will mark the first athletic event played in the renovated Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall.
