DELAND, Fla. - Providence College volleyball lost to Stetson, 3-1, in its first game on Saturday. The Friars moved to 3-3 on the season and Stetson improved to 4-3.
Stetson used a 4-0 run to take a 22-19 lead in the first set. The score was tied at 23-23 but Stetson was able to put together back-to-back points to take the set, 25-23. Freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Silver Spring, Md.) led the Friars with four kills in the set. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) registered 10 assists and freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) tallied seven digs.
In the second set, both teams traded points, with Providence going on a 4-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. PC again took the lead (19-17) after the teams were tied (17-17). The Friars ended up winning the set 25-21 with the match point coming off of a block by juniors Annie Russian (Round Rouck, Texas) and Mackenzie Ziegler's (Portage, Wis.).
Stetson took the third set 25-19 to gain a 2-1 lead in the match. The Hatter's used that momentum and closed out the match 3-1 with a 25-14 victory in the fourth set.
Providence was led by Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands Calif.) with a team-best 12 kills. Wiesler added 40 assists and Cruz tallied 30 digs.
The Hatters were led by Madison Akins with 14 kills. Kayla Weller had 48 assists and 18 digs were recorded by Michelle Kastner.
Providence plays again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Bethune Cookman.
