The Providence College volleyball team topped Bucknell University, 3-1, on Sunday, September 6, in the final day of the Volley In The Valley Tournament in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with a career-high 19 kills and hit at an impressive .429 clip. With the victory, the Friars improve to 3-4 on the season, while Bucknell falls to 3-3.
The Friars won the first set of the match, 25-21, but Bucknell responded with a 25-23 second set victory. Providence then won the next two sets, 25-18 and 27-25, to claim the match win.
In addition to Fletcher's career day, senior Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) also played a strong offensive game, registering 14 kills. Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) recorded her second double-double of the tournament, notching 45 assists and 10 digs.
PC also received strong contributions from two freshmen at the defensive specialist position. Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) had 18 digs for the Friars and Shelby Spicer (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) posted a career-high five aces to pace the team's service game.
The Friars held an 8-to-4 advantage in service aces in the match and out-blocked the Bison, 13-to-8.
Kaitlin Segal led Bucknell with 19 kills while Rachel Rodriguez and Emily Sawanobori notched 17 digs each for the Bison.
Providence finished tied for second place in the Volley In The Valley with a 1-2 record. Marist won the tournament with a 3-0 mark. For her efforts, Fletcher earned Volley In The Valley All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the tournament.
After today's matchup, the Friars make their home debut on Wednesday, September 2 against Brown in Mullaney Gymnasium at Alumni Hall. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
