EDINBURG, Texas - The Providence College volleyball team (0-2) was defeated by Oklahoma (1-0) on Friday, September 3 in Edinburg, Texas in straight games (3-0). The match marked PC's season-opener, and the opener of the McAllen Holiday Inn UTPA Invitational, held on the campus of Texas-Pan American. In its second match, Providence lost to Grambling State (3-1).

After losing the first game to Grambling State, 30-17, Providence came back with a 30-24 victory in game two. Grambling State then won game three, 30-20, and a hard fought game four, 30-26 to win the match.

Senior captain Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Friars with 13 kills while junior Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) chipped in 11 kills and 27 assists. Senior libero Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.) tallied eight digs for PC. Lacey Cromier led Grambling State with 18 kills and was one of three GSU players with a double-digit total.

Against Oklahoma the Friars fell by scores of 30-19, 30-19, 30-17. Sophomore Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) led the team with seven kills, while Cadres added nine digs. Jennifer Adams led the Sooners with a game-high 15 kills, including no errors, while Joanna Schmitt totaled 13 digs.

Providence volleyball returns to action on Saturday, September 4, on the final day of the tournament. The Friars will take on host Texas-Pan American at 2:00 p.m. and Louisiana-Monroe at 6:00 p.m.
