The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by Bryant, 3-0, on Tuesday night at the Chace Athletic Center. The Friars were led by senior Mackenzie Ziegler
(Portage, Wis.) who registered a match-high 12 kills. Providence now stands at 0-4 on the season and Bryant moves to 2-3.
Bryant won the first set, 25-17. Sophomore Marina Rose (Coventry, Conn.) led the friars with four kills in the stanza.
Rose again put up four kills in the second set but the Friars fell, 25-18. Sophomore Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) had a set-best nine digs.
Providence powered out to an 18-11 lead in the third set, behind six kills from Ziegler. With the score 24-23, in favor of the Friars, Bryant put together a string of three straight points to win the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.
In addition to Ziegler's match-high 12 kills, the senior had a .435 hitting percentage. Freshman Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded a team-high 17 assists while Cruz added 16 digs. Rose was just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs.
The Bulldogs were led by Elena Lohr who tallied 10 kills. Vika Nesterov posted 31 assists and Debora Magalahaes had 21 digs.
Each team recorded 11 kills in the second and third sets.
The Friars return to action this weekend to compete in the Purple Eagle Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 5-6) in Niagara, N.Y. On Friday, Providence faces Niagara at 11:00 a.m. and Gardner-Webb at 4:00 p.m. The Friars will play in one game on Saturday, against West Virginia, starting at 11:00 a.m.
