CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Providence College volleyball team continued play at the season-opening Charlotte Invitational. On Saturday, September 1, 2001, the Friars defeated Virginia Commonwealth for their first victory of the season, and was defeated by Middle Tennessee State.

In the 3-2 victory over VCU, the Friars were paced by the play of senior outside hitters Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) and Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.). Katinger recorded a match-high 28 kills and hit .462 in the win. Cella added 22 kills and 17 defensive digs. Providence received another strong performance from freshman middle blocked Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.), who totalled a season-high 20 kills, three service aces and two blocks.

In the Friars final match of the tournament, PC was defeated in three games to Middle Tennessee State. Katinger and Cella each paced the Friars with 15 kills, while Cella totalled a game-high 16 defensive digs.

Providence returns to action on September 7-8 when they travel to San Marcos, Texas to participate in the Southwest Texas B&G Properties Invitational.
