The Providence College volleyball team (0-2) fell to the University of Hartford, 3-1, and Niagara University, 3-0, on Saturday, August 29, at the Niagara Invitational Tournament in Niagara, N.Y. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) posted 13 kills over the two matches to lead the Friar offense.
Against Hartford, the Friars were defeated, 3-1, with set scores of 26-28, 22-25, 25-21 and 14-25. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied a career high with 10 kills to pace the Friars offensively. Senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) added eight kills and Hendel posted five for PC. Freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) notched 19 digs while sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) added 24 assists.
The Hawks offense was paced by Kami Nethersole (13 kills) and Erin Macro (12 kills). Setter Lindsay Ford posted 35 assists for Hartford.
Next up for the Friars was Niagara University. The Purple Eagles defeated PC, 3-0, with set scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-13. Hendel recorded a team-high eight kills for Providence and junior defensive specialist Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) registered eight digs and three service aces.
Kari Honomichl led the Purple Eagles with 11 kills on the night.
Providence will remain in Niagara to face off against Coppin State on Sunday, August 30 at 11:00 a.m. in the final day of the Niagara Invitational.
