Sept. 28, 2000 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Providence College standouts Mark Carroll (Cork, Ireland) and Sinead Delahunty (Kilkenny, Ireland) each finished seventh in their respected heats at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday, September 27. Carroll finished the 5000 meter race in a time of 13:30.60, placing him 16th overall, missing the qualifying time by four-tenths of a second. Delahunty recorded a time of 4:11.75 in the 1500 meters and missed qualifying for the semifinals by one one-hundredth of a second. Carroll, a six-time All-American at PC, qualified for the Irish Olympic team in the 1500 meters, 5000 meters and the 10,000 meters, more events than any other male runner from his country. This was the 1995 graduates first trip to the Olympic Games, he missed the 1996 Olympic Games due to a stress fracture. Delahunty, a six-time All-American at Providence, was making her second appearance at the Olympic Games. Delahunty qualified for this year's games by running under the Olympic "A" standard time (4:08.00) in August in Barcelona, Spain. Delahunty's time of 4:05.28 at Barcelona was her best 1500 meter time since running a personal best of 4:02.22 in Brussels, Belgium last year.
Ten former Providence College runners have competed in the last six summer Olympic Games. In 1984, John Treacy became the first Providence College athlete to earn a medal when he captured the Silver Medal in the Marathon.
