Shelby Greany Places 10th In Steeplechase At IAAF World Junior Track And Field Championships
July 23, 2010
MONCTON, Canada - Rising sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) concluded a stellar freshman year in track and field on Thursday, July 22 at the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Moncton, Canada. Competing for the United States, Greany placed 10th in a very competitive 3,000 meter steeplechase final. Greany was unfortunately involved in a fall at the first water barrier, where Mexico's Azucena Rodriguez slipped over the water jump, causing most of the field to falter. The field recovered and continued at a fast pace, which resulted in five national junior records being set. Kenya's Purity Kirui went on to win the race in a personal-best of 9:36.34, the second-fastest junior time in the world this year. Greany placed 10th in a time of 10:27.33. After the race, Greany said, "[The fall] was unexpected...but that's part of the steeplechase. Learn from it and move on." This World Junior Championship event concludes Greany's long freshman season. Greany ends the year having earned an All-American accolade in the steeplechase (sixth-place at NCAAs), as well as a BIG EAST title in the steeplechase, and two U.S. National Junior titles in both cross country and the steeple. Greany will take some much needed time off, and then begin preparations for the fall cross country season with the Friars.
