EUGENE, ORE. -
Two Friars will represent Providence College at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. on Saturday, June 14.
Sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basil, Switzerland) and Senior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) both qualified for the womens’ 5,000 meter run after finishing ninth (16:05.86) and 11th (16:08.36) respectively at the NCAA East Regional Qualifiying Round on Saturday, May 31. The 5,000 meters is set to go off at 6:24 p.m. ET.
Earlier this season, Collins captured her first BIG EAST title in the 10,000 meters (33:36.36) at the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday, May 10. The two-time All-American in cross country also posted a personal best time of 15:31.03 in the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, April 4. This will be Collins first NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship appearance.
Nagel will compete in her second NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She also captured a BIG EAST title earlier this season, winning the 5,000 meters (16:23.35) at the BIG EAST Championships on Sunday, May 11. Nagel also won the 3,000 meters (9:07.90) at the 2014 Penn Relays on Thursday, April 24.
Both Collins and Nagel were named BIG EAST Track Athletes of the Week during the 2014 outdoor season. Collins received the honor for her performance in the 5,000 meter run at the Stanford Invitational and Nagel for her 1,500 meter run at the Friar Invitational on Saturday, April 12. Along with weekly league honors, they were named to the All-BIG EAST Team on May 14 for their first place finishes at the 2014 BIG EAST Championships.
Days one and two of the championships will be streamed live on ESPN3 and days three and four will be televised live on ESPNU.
