Ganiel, Dupre, Ostrander and Moog Earn GTE Academic All-Dist. 1 Honors
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on May 25 that three members of the Providence College cross country/track teams, seniors Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) and Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario) and junior Dana Ostrander (Ballston Lake, N.Y.), earned 1999 GTE Academic All-District 1 Women's Spring At-Large honors. Providence College is the only school in District 1 to place three women on the Spring At-Large Team. Also, PC senior tennis player Jonathan Moog (Williamsville, N.Y.) was named to the 1999 GTE Academic All-District 1 Men's Spring At-Large Second-Team.
Ganiel, a political science major, has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.99 in her four years at Providence. It marks the sixth time Ganiel has earned GTE Academic All-District 1 At-Large honors. She also has been named to the GTE Academic All-America At-Large Team five times and was named the female recipient of the 1999 NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship. Ganiel has helped the PC cross country team capture one NCAA Championship (1995) and three BIG EAST and three New England titles in four years with the Friars. This spring, she concluded her track career at Providence by capturing her second consecutive 10,000 meter title at the 1999 ECAC Championship. Ganiel will pursue a doctorate at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Dupre, an english major with a 3.27 cumulative GPA, was PC's top runner this season. She won the 5,000 meter title at the ECAC Championship on May 21. In March, Dupre earned her third All-America honor by finishing fourth at the NCAA Indoor Track Championship. During the cross country season, she won the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship and was the Friars' first finisher in six of the team's seven races. Dupre placed 37th at the 1998 NCAA Cross Country Championship. On March 27-28, she represented Canada at the World Cross Country Championship in Belfast, Ireland and finished 71st in the 4,000 meters in a time of 17:10. Ostrander, an education major with a 3.86 cumulative GPA, has been a consistent performer for the Friars this season. On May 2, she placed third in the 10,000 meters at the BIG EAST Championship. Ostrander wrapped up the outdoor season with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000 meters at the ECAC Championship on May 22. In the fall, she helped the Friar cross country team by scoring in four of the six races she ran. Ostrander is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. Moog, who graduated with dual majors in finance and computer science, posted a 3.85 cumulative GPA. In four seasons at Providence, he registered a 23-20 singles mark and a 39-30 doubles record. He helped the PC men's team record a 67-32 mark in his career with the Friars. Moog is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. Since being named to the District 1 At-Large Teams, Ganiel, Dupre and Ostrander will now be considered for GTE Academic All-America At-Large National Team honors, which will be determined Thursday, June 17.
