Brooke Freeburg and Roisin McGettigan Will Compete at 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College track athletes Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) and Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) will compete at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be held on Wednesday, May 29 through Saturday, June 1 at Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at Louisiana State University.

McGettigan, a junior, qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 10:08.73 at the ECAC Championship at Princeton, N.J. on May 17. Her time of 10:08.73 is the seventh fastest of the 17 athletes who will compete in the NCAA steeplechase. Last year, McGettigan ran the steeplechase at the NCAA Championship in a time of 10:54.37. A two-time BIG EAST Steeplechase champion, she won her second consecutive BIG EAST 3,000 meter steeplechase title in a time of 10:24.70 on May 3.

Freeburg will be making her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Last year, Freeburg placed 14th in the javelin at the NCAA Championship and earned All-America accolades with a throw of 43.91 meters. She qualified for this year's NCAA Championship by finishing second in the javelin at the Penn Relays on April 25 with a career best throw of 50.02 meters. She also finished second in the javelin at the BIG EAST Championship (49.01 meters) on May 3 and the ECAC Championship (47.49 meters) on May 18.
