Men's and Women's Track Dominate at ECAC/IC4A after Day 1

FAIRFAX, Va. -- At the 1999 IC4A and ECAC Outdoor Track Championships in Fairfax, Va., Providence College three-time All-American Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario), senior Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) and All-American Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) led the Friars in their first day of competition as all three successfully defended their 1998 IC4A and ECAC titles. Dupre captured this year's ECAC 5,000, Ganiel won the 10,000 and Kelly won the IC4A 10,000.

Kelly ran a strong race for PC, winning the 10,000 meters in a time of 29:38 and qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Kelly ran a blistering pace, winning by 22 seconds over second-place finisher Vinny Mulvey of Iona (30:00.35). Last year, Kelly captured the 10,000 at the IC4A Championship in a time of 29:46.16.

On the women's side, Dupre dominated the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:29.77, finishing 18 seconds in front of second-place finisher Emily Germano of Cornell (16:47.92). Last year, Dupre captured the ECAC Outdoor 5,000 in a time of 16:22.88. PC junior Dana Ostrander (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) finished eighth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:21. In the 10,000, Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) won in a time of 35:59.84, 10 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Meghan Moriarity of Brown. In 1998, Ganiel won the ECAC 10,000 in a time of 34:57.96.

PC's women's team finished the first day in first place with 21 points as Dupre and Ganiel each earned 10 points and Ostrander earned one point.
