PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete at the 2004 BIG EAST Championship on February 21-22 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

The women's team will have a total of seven athletes competing. On Saturday, February 21, sophomore Jane Nalder (Wellington, New Zealand) will compete in the mile after qualifying for the Championship at the Terrier Classic on January 31, recording a time of 5:05.38. Classmate Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) will run the 1,000 meters. Crombie qualified for the BIG EAST on January 17 at the Women's Challenge Cup as she ran a time of 2:58.32. Junior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) will compete in the 800 meters. Byrne won the 800-meter race in a time of 2:10.46 on January 10 at the Boston University Three-Way Meet to qualify for the Championship. The mile, 1,000 meters and the 800 meters will have two days of competition, with the finals scheduled for Sunday, February 22.

Junior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) and senior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) will compete in the 5,000 meters on Saturday. Cullen has already qualified for the NCAA Championship in the mile and the 3,000 meters, while Cappello is an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 3,000 meters. On Sunday, juniors Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) and Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) will run the 3,000 meters. Smith has been impressive in her first indoor season with the Friars. Smith made her mark on January 17, when she won the 3,000 meters at Brown University's Women's Challenge Cup in a time of 9:04.90, which was then the fastest time in the world this season. Smith has qualified for the NCAA's in three events (mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters). In addition, Smith has broken Providence College indoor records in the mile and the 5,000 meters. The women's team will round out competition with the 4X800 meter relay on Sunday. The quartet of Byrne, Crombie, Cullen and Smith will pace the Friars.

The men's team will have nine athletes competing. Freshman Darren Brown (Spring, Texas) will lead the Friars in the mile. Brown ran his best time in the mile this season on January 31 at the Terrier Classic as he crossed the finish line in 4:10.97. Junior Liam Reale (Hospital Ireland) will compete in the 1,000 meters, while sophomore Richard Jones will run the 800 meters. In the 5,000 meters, the trio of graduate student Adam Sutton (Preston, England), junior Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) and Joseph Dionne (Oshawa, Ontario) all will compete. Sutton has run the fastest 5,000 meters (14:01.57) by a Providence athlete this year as he accomplished the feat at the FasTrack Invitational on February 13.

Junior Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) and sophomore Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) will run the 3,000 meters. Wykes and Fagan ran their best times in the 3,000 meters on January 31 at the Terrier Classic. Wykes finished first in a time of 7:58.70 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA's, while Fagan finished 10th in a time of 8:14.15 to qualify for the IC4A's.

The Friars also will have two relay teams at the BIG EAST Championship. On Saturday, the quartet of Reale, Fagan, Wykes and Jones will run the distance medley relay. On Sunday, Brown, sophomore Dan Robb (Newton, Mass.), Jones and Reale will compete in the 4X800 meter relay.
