Men's And Women's Track Wrap Up Competition At NCAA East Regional Championships

Men's and Women's Track Competes at the NCAA East Regional Championship -- May 28-29 GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Providence College men's and women's outdoor track teams completed competition at the NCAA East Regional Championship on May 29 in Gainesville, Fla.
On May 29, junior Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) placed sixth (4:22.56) in the 1,500 meter finals and just missed qualifying automatically for the NCAA Championship on June 9-12 in Austin, Texas. Teammate sophomore Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) placed eighth (4:23.67) in the 1,500 finals. The top five finishers in each race automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, with the next six or seven top times in the nation also advancing.
Senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) joined junior Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) as automatic qualifiers for the Friars. Freeburg placed fifth in the javelin on Saturday with a throw of 45.39 meters. On Friday, Smith led the Friars as she captured the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:51.03. With her first-place finish, Smith qualified for the NCAA Championship. Sophomore Jane Nalder (Wellington, New Zealand) finished 10th in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:38.85) on Saturday. Junior Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) finished fourth (3:49.93) in his heat of the 1,500 meter preliminaries and qualified for the 1,500 meter finals on Saturday. Reale did not finish in the finals on Saturday. In the 5,000 meters on Saturday, sophomore Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) placed eighth (14:27.28) and junior Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) was 11th (14:37.7).
