NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Providence College Friar men's and women's track teams competed in the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regional Track Championships at Randall's Island in New York, N.Y. on Friday, May 27.

In the 5,000 meter championship, senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished second in a time of 15:49.69. By finishing second, Cullen qualified for the NCAA Championships on June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif. Senior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) placed ninth (4:27.38) in the 1,500 meters and qualified for the finals on Saturday.

On the men's side, junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) finished fifth (13:56.82) in the 5,000 and qualified for the NCAA Championship. Also in the 5,000, senior Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) placed 11th (14:13.48) and junior Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ontario) finished 23rd (14:46.33). In the 1,500 meters trials, freshman Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) finished third (3:50.11) and senior Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) placed eighth (3:49.05). Both runners qualified for the 1,500 meter finals on Saturday.
