Women's Outdoor Track Finishes 11th At 2002 BIG EAST Track And Field Championships

STORRS, Conn. - The Providence College women's outdoor track team competed at the 2002 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex in Storrs, Connecticut, on May 3-5. The Friars finished 11th out of 14 teams with 31 points. Junior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) earned her second-consecutive BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Individual title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship, with a first-place finish in a time of 10:24.70. Junior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) also became a NCAA provisional qualifier in the women's javelin throw. The defending BIG EAST Champion finished second with a throw of 49.01 meters. In the 10,000-meter run, senior Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) finished third and qualified for the ECAC Championship, with a time of 35:33.23. In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) led all PC runners with a fifth-place finish (16:44.73). Cullen's time is a NCAA provisional qualifier. Senior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) finished ninth (16:57.22) in the 5,000, while sophomore Emily Tallen (Kingston, Ontario) placed 12th (17:31.40). Both Casserly and Tallen qualified for the ECAC Championship. The 4x800 meter relay team, made up of junior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland), senior Kate Gall (Cumberland, Md.), freshman Roisin Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and McGettigan, placed sixth with a time of 8:54.92. Their time is an ECAC qualifier.
