PROVIDENCE, R.I. - With less than a week remaining before the BIG EAST championships, the Providence College track and field teams took part in one last tune-up Sunday, the Brown Springtime Open.
The Providence contingent was led by the men's 4 x 400-meter relay. The quartet of Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass), Chris Booker (Philadelphia, Pa.), Matt Conti (Cohoes, N.Y.) and Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) earned first place in a thrilling contest with a clocking of 3:25.80, edging second-place Stonehill by just five one hundredths of a second (3:25.85).
Also running well for the men was sophomore Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.), who grabbed second in the 1500 with a time of 3:59.50, and freshman Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) who placed fourth in the same event with a 4:01.1.
On the women's side, freshman Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) surpassed the conference standard in the 800-meters by nearly a full second, crossing the line in 2:13.10.
The 4 x 400 team of Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, N.Y.), Caroline Callaghan (Rochester, N.H), Kelsey Dermody (Norton, Mass) and Meg Van Name (Stamford, Conn) placed fourth in 4:18.70. It was Abelseth's second top-five finish of the day, as she also finished fifth in the 400 meters with a 59.70.
The meet completes a full weekend for PC, who shined at the Penn Relays Thursday. Providence enjoyed victories at the prestigious meet by seniors Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) in the 3000 and Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the steeplechase.
The BIG EAST Championships will take place May 4-6 in Tampa , Florida.
