PROVIDENCE COLLEGE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK

PENN RELAYS, Philadelphia, Pa. - April 24, 2003

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Providence College men's and women's track teams competed at the Penn Relays in their first day of competition on Thursday, April 24.

The Friar men's team was led by graduate student Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) and senior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.). Reilly placed 11th in the 5,000 meter college championship race in a time of 14:08.92. McCabe, who also ran the 5,000 meter college championship race, placed 19th in a time of 14:17.58. Both runners qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships on May 30-31 at Fairfax, Va.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase college race, junior Jamie Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.) placed eighth (9:13.11) and qualified for the IC4A Championship. Senior Tim Curran (Northboro, Mass.) also qualified for the IC4A Championship as he finished 24th in the 10,000 meter college championship race in a time of 30:58.18. Rounding out the men's participants, sophomore Pat Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) finished 11th in the 5,000 meter college men's race in a time of 14:44.94.

On the women's side, senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) placed second in the college championship javelin event with her best throw of the season. Freeburg's throw of 48.51 meters qualified her for the NCAA Regional Championships. Sophomore Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) ran a strong race in the 5,000 meter college championship event. Cullen finished second in a time of 16:09.49 and qualified for the ECAC Championship.

In the 3,000 meter college championship race, junior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) finished 24th (10:00.70) and her sister, Heather, placed 25th (10:04.24).
