Mary Cullen Wins BIG EAST Indoor Track Title In 5,000 Meters

AKRON, OHIO - The Providence College women's indoor track team competed at the BIG EAST Championship on February 18 at the Akron Athletics Field House in Akron, Ohio. After day one of the two-day championship, the Friars sit in second place in the team standings with 20 points. Pittsburgh leads the team standings with 34 points. Senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) won the BIG EAST title in the 5,000 meters with a first-place finish in a time of 15:58.78. Her time is an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Time and smashed a facility record previously held by Brandi Schoeppner of Akron at 16:53.48. Cullen's time also marked the second fastest 5,000 meter indoor time in BIG EAST Championship history. Graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) placed fourth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:25.25. Her time marks a provisional NCAA Qualifying Time. Freshman Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) took a sixth place finish in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:53.90 and qualified for ECACs. Senior Ashley Jensen (Lincoln, R.I.) finished 16th in the 5,000 meter field in a time of 17:42.59. In the women's distance medley, the Friars finished seventh of 15 teams. Sophomore Mary Nelle Trefz (Iowa City, Iowa), senior Roisin Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), frehman Kate Campbell (Auckland, New Zealand) and sophomore Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) finished the event in a time of 12:08.45 and qualified for the ECAC Championship.
The Friars will resume action in the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship on Sunday, February 19.
