Stephen Walsh enters his third season as the Head Men's Track & Field Coach at Providence College.
Walsh, a 2001 graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. in accounting, served as an assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at the University of Pennsylvania from 2002-06. At Penn, his primary duty was working with the distance and cross country runners.
In Walsh's first season at Providence College, the Friar men's and women's cross country teams each captured BIG EAST team titles and saw Martin Fagan earn the men's individual BIG EAST title and claim All-America honors at the NCAAs. Aine Hoban finished second overall at the BIG EAST Cross Championships and also earned All-America honors at the NCAA's.
During the 2006-07 indoor and outdoor track seasons, the Friars won a total of four BIG EAST individual championships and three Friar runners captured All-America honors a total of four times.
In the 2007-08, the Friar men's and women's teams enjoyed success during the cross-country season. The men's team finished third of 14 teams at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship; while the women's team finished second of 16 teams. The women's team captured the title and the men's team also had a strong second-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. Danette Doetzel and Max Smith each claimed the indivdual titles. The team had two all-americans; Danette Doetzel and Ahmed Haji.
During the 2007-08 indoor and outdoor track seasons, the Friars had one BIG EAST individual champion and one runner captured All-America honors. Dannete Doetzel achieved both honors.
At Penn State, Walsh was a four-year varsity letter winner in cross country as well as track. Walsh was named to the All-East Indoor Track Team (1998, 2000, 2001), All-Region Cross Country Team (2000, 2001), and All-Big Ten Cross Country Second Team in 2001.
Walsh also earned Academic All-BIG Ten accolades for three seasons and received the Student Athlete Achievement Award in 1999.
