The Providence College women's tennis team releases its fall schedule for the 2013-14 season. The Friars will kick off their fall season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Sacred Heart Doubles Invitational in Fairfield, Conn. The tournament is set to start at 9:00 a.m.
The Friars will return 15 out of their 18 person roster from last season, including senior captain Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic).
Two freshman will join the Friar line-up for the 2013-14 season. Freshman Jennifer DeLuca (Riverside, Conn.) earned First Team All-State and First Team All-FCIAC all four years with Greenwich High School. Classmate Amanda Pitocco (Warwick, R.I.) earned four varsity letters in tennis at La Salle Academy. Pitocco was a four-time Rhode Island Interscholastic League First Team All-Division and All-State awardee.
Last season, the Friars claimed a 14-9 record, it marked the first winning season since 2001-02 (11-8). Providence's 13 wins were the most regular season victories since the 1999-00 season. The Friars also claimed the New England Championship title during the 2012-13 season. Three returning Friars notched career highs during the 2012-13 season, including Bernardez and juniors Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) and Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico).
Providence loses its top player from the 2012-13 season, Marisela Aviles-Duron `13 to graduation. During the season, Aviles-Duron set two PC records for the most career wins at the No. 1 position for both singles (75) and doubles (57). Aviles-Duron served as co-captain during her senior campaign with doubles partner Bernardez.
The Friars will compete in three tournaments during the fall season as well as go head-to-head with Stonehill, UMass, Holy Cross, and Hartford. The Friars will look to qualify for the USTA Invitational and the ITA Regional Championships to be held in Oct.
