Providence Tennis Places Five Student-Athletes On Division I All-Independent Teams

Fort Wayne, Ind. - A total of five different Providence College tennis players have earned All-Independent recognition, as the Friars placed three student-athletes on the Division I Independent Women's Tennis All-Academic Team, two on the All-Newcomer Team and one on the All-Independent Team.

Providence's senior captain Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) was the only Friar to earn a spot on multiple teams as she was named to the All-Independent Second Team as well as the Independent All-Academic Team. Freshmen Meghan Gilroy (Southport, Conn.) and Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) earned two of the six spots on the All-Newcomer Team while sophomores Erin Kenaga (Norwalk, Conn.) and Kate Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) also earned All-Academic recognition.

Bitetti, a four-year standout and two-time captain for PC, posted a 15-15 doubles record this year and was 13-14 in singles play. She finished her career at Providence with 48 doubles wins and 35 singles victories, as well as two appearances in the Wilson/ITA Eastern Regionals. She will graduate from Providence College with a degree in Applied Physics and had a cumulative GPA of 3.649 at the time of the All-Academic Team selection.

Gilroy, who took the third spot on the All-Newcomer Team, posted the Friars' best doubles record this year (16-13) and paired with junior Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) for a second-place finish (at No. 3) at the New England Championships. She played mostly at No. 3, where she complied a 14-9 record, including a season-ending streak of 5-0. In singles, Gilroy finished her rookie year with an overall record of 10-15.

Rissolo, who took the fifth spot on the All-Newcomer Team, posted a 14-14 doubles record. She was 9-9 at No. 3 and 1-3 at No. 2, before moving up to the No. 1 position in the spring season - where she teamed with Sara Bitetti to post a 4-2 record. In singles competition, she started the year at No. 4 before finishing her rookie campaign at No. 2 and turned in an overall record of 9-16.

Kenaga, who finished the year with consecutive wins over Hartford and Holy Cross, is majoring in Education and had a cumulative GPA of 3.4481 at the time of the All-Academic Team selection.

Lyons was the only Friar to go undefeated (3-0) in Providence's fall dual matches. Despite battling through injury for a significant part of the season, she went on win five of her final six singles matches and posted an overall record of 10-11. She is an English major and had a cumulative GPA of 3.2233 at the time of the All-Academic Team selection.

The ten members making up the Independent Conference for Division I women's tennis are: Holy Cross (Worcester, Mass.), Indiana University-Purdue Fort Wayne (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Longwood (Farmville, Va.), Northern Colorado (Greeley, Colo.), Providence (Providence, R.I.), Savannah State (Savannah, Ga.), South Dakota State (Brookings, S.D.), Texas A&M Corpus Chrisi (Corpus Christi, Texas), Texas Pan American (Edinburg, Texas) and UC Davis (Davis, Calif.).
