Brooke Rubin Sets PC Women's Tennis Record With 79th Career Singles Win
March 7, 2002 Providence College women's tennis senior Brooke Rubin (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) set the school's all-time singles victories record on Tuesday, March 5. The Friars defeated Lake Superior State, 7-0, in Orlando, Fla. and Rubin beat Lake Superior State's Mary Blake, 6-0, 6-1, to break the record. Rubin, who has played at the No. 1 singles spot since her sophomore season when she recorded a 23-10-1 mark, is 16-5 at No. 1 singles this season, including a 5-0 mark in the spring season. On October 21, 2001, Rubin captured her second consecutive New England Tennis Championship crown at No. 1 singles as she led the Friars to a fourth place finish. Last season, she led the Friars with 18 singles victories and won the 2000 New England Championship at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.
The all-time singles record has been broken in three straight seasons. In 2000 Jessie LeMasters set the mark with 69 wins, while Alison Carton finished her career in 2001 with 78 career victories.
