The Providence College women's tennis team saw three Friars compete at the ITA Regional Championships Thursday, Oct. 17 to Sunday, Oct. 20. One Friar made her way through the qualifying rounds to tag a spot in the singles main draw event.
Sophomore Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) competed her way through the qualifying rounds of singles play to earn a bid in the main draw singles round. Prinos toppled a competitor from Harvard (6-1, 6-1) before moving on in a tough fought battle with a competitor from NJIT. Prinos earned the win with a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-0 performance. Once reaching the main draw event, Prinos fell to a competitor from Stonybrook (4-6, 6-2, 6-0) in a long hard fought match. Overall Prinos went 2-1 on the weekend.
Senior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) also competed in the singles main event, earning a bye past the qualifying rounds. Bernardez played a competitor from Hosftra in the opening round of the single elimination draw. The Hosftra competitor topped Bernardez (6-1, 7-5) to give Bernardez a 0-1 record on the weekend.
Bernardez also competed with sophomore Hannah Zangari (Sauderstown, R.I.) in the doubles main draw, where the duo fell to a pair from Fairfield (8-0).
The Friars wrapped up fall play with a 2-1 overall record, sweeping Holy Cross and Hartford, 7-0, to earn each of their wins. Providence will pick-up with conference play during the spring.
