WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -
The Providence College women's tennis team swept the Hartford Hawks, 7-0, on Monday, Oct. 14. The Friars and Hawks competed in West Hartford, Conn. It was the second time this season the Friars swept an opponent, the last was on Sept. 29, when Providence topped Holy Cross 7-0.
Senior Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) led the Friars with a win against Katina Zampas in the No. 1 singles position (6-0, 6-3). The win moved Bernardez's record at the No. 1 position to 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) earned a win in the No. 2 singles position with a win over Emily Sneddon (6-0, 6-3). Freshman Jennifer DeLuca (Riverside, Conn.) topped Hannah Goldman at the No. 3 position (6-0, 6-1).
Sophomore Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) competed in the No. 4 position, where she defeated Madeline Makings (6-2, 6-3). Classmate Olivia Hogan (Gaithersburg, Md.) earned a win against Colleen Beck at the No. 5 position (6-2, 6-1). Freshman Amanda Pitocco (Warwick, R.I.) shutout Jessica Galik (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 6 position.
In doubles play, Bernardez and Zangari took the win at the No. 1 flight over Zampas and Beck (8-2). At the No. 2 doubles position, DeLuca and Prinos topped Sneddon and Galik (8-0). The final Friar pair to compete in doubles play was Pitocco and Hogan, who swept Goldman and Christie Greenberg (8-0) in the No. 3 position.
The Friars are back in action Oct. 17-20, when the team competes at the ITA Regional Championships in Cambridge, Mass.).
