The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Rhode Island, 7-0, on Wednesday, October 3 in Providence, R.I. The Friars swept all three doubles matches on the afternoon and each of the six singles matches.
In doubles, Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) defeated Kathleen Uy and Galina Chernyk, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot. Alana Prinos (Foxborough, Mass.) and Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) upended Nithila Asokaraj and Karolina Wojciak, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Hannah Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) defeated Elizaveta Sadovnikova and Kristin Bertsch, 8-3.
In singles play, Aviles-Duron topped Chernykh in a hard-fought match at No. 1 in a tie breaker, 6-2, 4-6 (10-4). At No. 2, Bernardez also took the win in a tie breaker after being shut out in the first set. She earned the win over Uy with scores of 0-6, 6-3, 10-4. Prinos defeated Asokaraj in straight sets (6-0, 6-3) at No. 3 singles. Corder took down Sadovnikova, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Ramirez and Zangari each earned victories in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Ramirez posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while Zangari won, 6-0, 6-3.
