Women's Tennis Defeats Hartford, 4-3

The Providence College Friars opened the dual match portion of the season with a, 4-3, victory over the University of Hartford on Sunday, September 22 at West Hartford, Conn.
In singles action, Providence's No. 1 sophomore Katy Bednar (Marblehead, Mass.) lost to Ana Maria Mora, 6-1, 6-4. PC's No. 2 freshman Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) continued her winning ways with a, 7-6, 6-4, victory over Alexis Alexander. PC's No. 3 sophomore Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) picked up where she left off on Saturday with a victory over Lauren Perry, 3-2 (default). Providence's No. 4, freshman Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) and No. 5 sophomore Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) fell respectively to Crystallia Leontiadis, 6-3, 6-4, and Stefanie Leontiadias, 7-5, 2-1 (default). In the final singles slot PC's No. 6 sophomore Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) defeated Angela Venincasa, 6-4, 6-0.
As the teams moved into doubles competition the Friars and Hawks were tied, 3-3. The No.1 team of Bednar and Christensen fell to Mora and Alexander, 8-4. The Friars' No. 2 team made up of Lapane and Bitetti defeated Perry and Leontiadis, 8-3. In the final match of the day Gilbride and Rodger picked up where they left off on Saturday and defeated Leontiadis and Venincasa, 8-2, to capture the victory for Providence.
