The Providence College women’s tennis team traveled to Loudonville, N.Y. over the weekend for the Siena Invitational Tennis Tournament.  The Friars took on teams from the host Siena as well as Holy Cross and the University of Hartford.  Matches started the morning of Saturday, September 20 and ran through the following afternoon.  The Friars finished the weekend going 11-9 in singles matches and 8-4 in doubles.

Providence finished the first day with an overall record of 4-3 in singles and 6-2 in doubles.  Leading the way on the singles side was sophomore Ally Wegner (Morristown, N.J.).  Wegner defeated Holy Cross’ Megan Manaher, 6-3, 6-4, in the Flight D bracket.  Wegner took her win into the second day of matches, defeating Siena’s Jen Messing in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-0.  Wegner lost in the finals to Holy Cross’ Kathryn Wilkie, 6-2, 6-2.

On the doubles side, two pairs of Friars earned their way to finals in both the A and B Flights.  Sophomore Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) and senior Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) won both of their matches on Saturday (8-2 over Hartford, 8-4 over Siena), securing their path to the Flight A finals on Sunday.  Sinha and Rissolo fell in the finals, 8-5, dropping to Siena’s Sarah Mayer and Jasleen Sandhu.  Freshman Melanie Albert (Sanibel, Fla.) and senior Amy McDevitt (East Greenwich, R.I.) also went undefeated on Saturday, defeating Holy Cross 8-3, and Hartford 8-3.  Albert and McDevitt fell in the Flight B finals match on Sunday, 8-3, to Siena’s Nicole Ross and Jes Asselin.

The Friars return to head-to-head action on Wednesday, September 24 when they host Holy Cross in Providence, R.I.  Matches are set for a 4:00 p.m. start.
