PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College women’s tennis team (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) defeated the University of Hartford (0-1, 0-0 America East), 7-0, for its first win of the 2009 season on Wednesday, September 16.

The Friars were led by senior captain Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.). Cusack lost only one game in her match against Kierston Cocuzzo, winning 6-1, 6-0.

Providence also saw strong performances from freshmen Marisela Aviles-Huron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), Brittany Maddock (Marietta, Ga.) and Courtney Burek (Wheaton, Ill.). Aviles-Huron cruised in her match, winning 6-0, 6-1. Coach Kyle LaBranche commented on her early success, “Marisela in particular was outstanding, dropping only four points in the first set against a tough player.” Maddock and Burek posted an impressive doubles victory, winning the first match of their collegiate careers, 8-3.

Overall, Coach LaBranche said, “…The team played very well.”

The Friars have a quick turnaround, as they are back in action Thursday, September 17 to take on Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
