Women's Tennis Defeats St. John's, 4-3, In Season Finale

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The Providence College women's tennis team defeated St. John's University, 4-3, on Saturday, April 13 in the Friars' season finale in Jamaica, N.Y. Providence senior Brooke Rubin (Cranston, R.I.), who was one win away from breaking her own school record for most wins in a season, was defeated, 6-4, 6-4, by the Red Storm's Nataliya Kostova at No. 1 singles. Rubin finished the season with a 23-6 record and completed a brilliant career with 86 wins, which is a school record. The Friars captured the doubles competition as Rubin and Gina Vlasek (Atlanta, Ga.) posted an 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot, while freshmen Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) and Katy Bednar (Marblehead, Mass.) won at the No. 2 position. In singles, senior captain Gina Vlasek (Atlanta, Ga.) defeated St. John's Tessa Lewis, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 position. Senior Katie Lafayette (Norwich, Mass.) posted a 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 5 and freshman Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) also posted a straight set win at No. 6. With the win, the Friars finished the season with an 11-8 overall record, including a 7-6 mark in the spring season.
