Women's Tennis Falls To Rutgers, 7-0

The Providence College Friars tennis team was swept by Rutgers University, 7-0, on Friday, April 11, in East Brunswick, N.J.

In singles action, Providence's No. 1 freshman Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) was defeated by Andrea Weckstein, 6-0, 6-2, while PC's No. 2, freshman Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) was downed by Carissa Sommerlad, 6-2, 6-1. PC's No. 3, sophomore Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) shutout by Jennifer Hellier, 6-0, 6-0. Providence's No. 4, sophomore Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) was defeated by Alina Balasa, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) playing in the No. 5 slot for Providence was beaten by Ketevan Schmakova, 6-1, 6-0. In the final singles slot PC's No. 6 junior Trisha Pollock (York, Maine) was shutout by Jill Markowitz, 6-0, 6-0.

The Friars were swept in doubles action for the second match in a row, as the No.1 team of Christensen and Bitetti fell to Weckstein and Sommerlad, 8-0, while the No. 2 team of Gilbride and Lapane were defeated by Hellier and Shmakova, 8-3. In the final doubles match of the day the No. 3 doubles team of Rodger and Katie Viola (South Hadley, Mass.) were defeated by Kaitlin Link and Helen Magomedova, 8-1.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, April 12 as the travel to Fairfield, Connecticut for a match against Fairfield University at noon.
