Women's Tennis Defeats UNH, 4-3, For Third Consecutive Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's tennis team defeated New Hampshire, 5-2, on Sunday, April 7. The win was the third consecutive for the Friars who improved to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in the spring season. Senior Brooke Rubin (Cranston, R.I.) overcame a one set deficit to defeat UNH's Lindsey Johnson (East Lansing, Mich.), 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Rubin stayed unbeaten in the spring season (11-0) and improved to 22-5 overall, one win shy of tying a single season win record, which she set during the 1999-00 season. Freshman Katy Bednar (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Katie Lafayette (Norwich, Conn.) recorded straight set victories at the No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively. At No. 6 singles, freshman Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) defeated UNH's Amy Suprenant (Madison, Conn.), 6-1, 6-3. In doubles competition, the Friars won all three matches. Seniors Gina Vlasek (Atlanta, Ga.) and Rubin won, 8-5, at the No. 1 spot. Freshmen Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) and Bednar registered an 8-1 win at No. 2, while seniors Erin Haley (Johnston, R.I.) and Lafayette posted an 8-4 at the No. 3 position. The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, April 9 as they host Connecticut at 3:00 p.m.
