Women's Tennis Defeats Fordham, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's tennis team won its second consecutive match, defeating Fordham University, 4-3, on Saturday, April 6 in Providence, R.I. Senior Brooke Rubin (Cranston, R.I.) improved to 10-0 in the spring and 21-5 overall at No. 1 singles as she defeated Fordham's Ioana Dragan (Bucharest, Romania), 6-4, 6-0. Senior Katie Lafayette (Norwich, Conn.) posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. In the deciding match of the afternoon, freshman Katy Bednar (Marblehead, Mass.) defeated Fordham's Alexandra Cazangiu (Bucharest, Romania), 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. Down one set and 0-4 in the second set, Bednar battled back to win the next six consecutive games to capture the second set, 6-4. In the third set, Bednar cruised to a 6-3 win and earned her 12th singles victory of the season. In doubles action, the Friars captured two of the three matches. Seniors Gina Vlasek (Atlanta, Ga.) and Rubin posted an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot. Freshmen Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) and Bednar registered an 8-1 win at No. 2. The Friars improved to 9-7 overall and 5-5 in the spring season. The Rams fell to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the spring. The Friars are back in action on Sunday, April 7 as they host New Hampshire at noon.
