Women's Tennis Defeats Holy Cross, 5-1

The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Holy Cross, 5-1, on Thursday, April 4 in Providence, R.I. Senior captain Gina Vlasek (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way for the Friars as she defeated Holy Cross' Missy Crump (Farmington, Conn.), 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Senior Brooke Rubin (Cranston, R.I.) recorded a 6-1, 6-1, win at the No. 1 spot over Amy Crump (Farmington, Conn.). Vlasek, who didn't play in the October 2 match against Holy Cross because of an injury, teamed with Rubin to post a 9-8 victory at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Katy Bednar (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Katie Lafayette (Norwich, Conn.) posted straight set victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Freshman Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) outlasted the Crusaders' Illy Nagy (Sutton, Mass.), 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (12-10), in a two-hour match. The Friars improved to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the spring season. The Crusaders dropped to 13-2 overall and 0-2 in the spring. The Friars return to action on Saturday, April 6 as they host Fordham in Providence.
