Women's Tennis Suffers Sweep At The Hands Of UMass, 7-0

    AMHERST, MASS. -

    The Providence College women’s tennis team was defeated by the University of Massachusetts, 7-0, on April 1 at the Mullins Center Tennis Courts in Amherst, Mass. Maria Clara Bernardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) each pushed their singles matches to three sets at the No. 2 and No. 4 slots, respectively.

    At No. 1 singles, Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) retired in the second set while trailing, 2-0, to Sonia Bokhari. She had previously lost the first set, 6-2. Bernardez put up a good fight at No. 2 singles against Yuliana Motyl. She dropped the first set, 6-3, and came back to win the second set, 6-3. In the deciding third set, she fell, 10-6. Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) fell at No. 3 singles to Jessica Podlofsky, 6-1, 6-0.

    Corder gutted out a first set victory over Julia Comas, 7-5, but fell, 7-6 and 10-4, in the second and third sets. At No. 5, Taylor Ahlborn (Minneapolis, Minn.) fell to Onaga, 6-2, 6-1. Alli Carnall (Hatfield, Mass.) dropped her No. 6 singles match to Chanel Glasper, 6-2, 6-0.

    The Friars also were swept in doubles play. Providence returns to action against Quinnipiac on April 4 in Providence, R.I.
