Women's Tennis Falls To Stony Brook, 5-2

The Providence College Friars tennis team was defeated by Stony Brook, 5-2, on Saturday, March 29, in Stony Brook, N.Y. In singles action, Providence's No. 1 freshman Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) was defeated by Patricia Gomez, 6-4, 6-2, while PC's No. 2, freshman Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) was defeated by Anne Cathrine Valle in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. PC's No. 3, sophomore Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) lost to Karen Hansen, 6-0, 6-3. Providence's No. 4, sophomore Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) was defeated by Georgia Bushell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) playing in the No. 5 slot for Providence defeated Carmie Zink, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. In the final singles slot PC's No. 6 junior Trisha Pollock (York, Maine) defeated Claire Shean, 6-3, 6-3. The Friars were swept in doubles action, as the No.1 team of Lapane and Bitetti fell to Gomez and Valle, 8-4, while the No. 2 team of Gilbride and Christensen were defeated by Hansen and Zink, 8-4. In the final match of the day the No. 3 doubles team of Rodger and Katie Viola (South Hadley, Mass.) were defeated by Bushell and Shean, 8-6. The Friars return to action on Thursday, April 3 as the travel to Storrs, Conn. for a match against the University of Connecticut at 3:00 p.m.
